Music

I’ve always been fascinated by music from an early age.  Listening to my parents Kingston Trio records and the soundtrack from the Oklahoma still sticks in my mind.  Then in 3rd grade my parents brought home the Beatles first LP on VeeJay Records and it was all over for me.  While I could never carry a tune in a bucket I have always pursued music.  In 3rd grade we made cardboard cutouts of guitars and bass.   When I was 13 I got my first guitar (an imitation Les Paul). After previously failing at piano lessons I decided to tinker with guitar for personal pleasure.  I’m still tinkering today and still having fun with it.

My parents were wonderfully supportive of music hobby which initially grew to a large record collection and eventually to attending big time rock and roll shows at the Honolulu International Center (Elvis would make this famous in 1974).  I saw bands like Three Dog night (my first big time show), Jimi Hendrix (8/1/70 – a picture from that show is on my header), Led Zepellin (’70), Ten Years After (’70) there.    There was also a thriving free music scene where even on my neighborhood green or at teen club you would find a trio covering live Cream tracks from Wheels Of Fire or the Doors latest – perfectly!

Over the years I’ve seen countless bands and count among my favorite shows over the decades (in no particular order): The Tubes, Weather Report, Genesis, The Replacements, Yes, Focus, Wishbone Ash, U2, Concrete Blonde, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, etc……

I used to have a trade list on-line back in the days of snail mail music trading.  Now it’s all bittorrent based digital trading but for grins I offer a peek of my old trading site:  jeffdorman.com I bet you’ll find it a bit obsessive… and it hasn’t got any better. LOL! And too bad I let that domain name get away. Drat!

Here are some more photos from that Jimi Hendrix show at the HIC in 1970. All credit goes to the original photographer – if only I knew his name.

A recording of that particular show can be found at the official Jimi Hendrix site here and clicking on ‘Concert Recording’ and scrolling to ‘JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: LIVE AT THE HONOLULU INTERNATIONAL CENTER ARENA’.   Or click here to link directly to the Real Audio stream.

The Tubes have been a favorite band since 1975. On 10/15/75 at the U.of MD. College Park they played 2 nights in the Student Union Theater. Some pictures taken by Dennis Lee (where are you now Dennis?) are showcased in this web albumof Tubes related stuff (gotta love that five dollar bill signed by Fee Waybill on the Young & Rich tour in ’76).

Go see what’s new with the Tubes at Mike Cotton’s “The Tubes Project” or The Tubes home page.

Hopefully I’ll be adding more slide shows from concert pics or rare album/CD art and other links as things evolve.

Let me know what you think!
